Canberra’s Truffle Season: Where Winter Meets Wonder and a Few Good Dogs

As frost nips at your nose and the scent of earthy decadence fills the air, Canberra emerges as Australia’s unsung hero of haute fungi. Winter isn’t just for hibernation here—it’s for hunting black gold, by gold, we mean truffles, the kind that could make a Michelin-starred chef weep. The ones that cost up to $2,000 a kilo, because luxury has a price.

The Canberra region nestled in Australia’s capital—with its moody soil, crisp mornings, and farmers who treat truffles like their firstborn. Forget jetting to France; this is one of the few places outside Europe where these aromatic nuggets thrive. Between truffle hunts led by dogs with better jobs than most of us, the season peaks at the Southern Harvest Winter Market (28th July), where growers gather to prove winter is anything but bleak.

From dirt-to-dinner-plate, Canberra’s truffle calendar is a three-month love letter to gourmands (June–August). Local farms like Beltana Farm and The Truffle Farm are rolling out the fungal red carpet with hunts, degustations, and enough truffle butter to make your cardiologist nervous.

Your Sniff-Itinerary for Canberra’s Truffle Trail

BELTANA FARM
Where truffles meet their adoring public (and a glass of bubbly).

Just 10 minutes from Canberra’s CBD, this farm swaps office blocks for sprawling oaks and hazelnut groves. From late June, they’re serving up truly immersive experiences.

After Dark Truffle Fest – 20th June AUD $150 per person
Kick off the season with twilight canapés amid glowing truffière lights, followed by a shared feast so hearty, you’ll want to write a sonnet about the truffle-laced dessert.

Hunt & Lunch – Weekends, mid-June to mid-August AUD $220 per person
Part treasure hunt, part long-table indulgence. Hunt with the pros, then feast on your spoils.

Hunt and Cooking Class – Saturdays, mid-June to mid-August AUD $150 per person
Learn to shave truffles like a pro and whip up some truffle infused wizardry while sipping and sampling some amazing sparkling wines like you’ve earned it (you have).

THE TRUFFLE FARM

Where 8,000 oak trees and one very fancy dog squad await.

Tucked into the Majura Valley, this boutique farm blends education, adventure, and dishes so decadent, you’ll question every life choice that led you not to become a truffle farmer.

Truffle Hunt – Weekends, June–August AUD $75 per person
Watch expertly trained dogs sniff out the loot, this all ends with a tasting and a chance to buy some prized truffles before they’re off for auction.

Truffle Hunt & Brunch – Weekends, June–August AUD $175 per person
Brunch with a truffle twist: three courses, a free drink, and farm products to take home. Because why have avocado toast when you can have truffle toast?

Truffle Hunt & Lunch – Weekends, June–August AUD $250 per person
The grand finale: Hunt, then devour a seven-course degustation with paired wines. Chef Kanharith Kim will demo truffle tricks—though we suspect she’s hiding a few secrets.

Beyond the Farms

Canberra’s top restaurants are also diving headfirst into truffle mania, with seasonal menus and degustations that’ll have you plotting a permanent move.

So, don your winter woollies, channel your inner truffle hound, and follow your nose to Canberra—where winter is less “brr” and much more of a Jolly Holi.
